The chapter of Connection showcases how people communicate and interact with other residents living inside the building, as well as their attitudes to nearby Tulou and visitors. The brochure is divided into three sections, “space,” welcoming,” and “supportive.”
The chapter of Disconnection showcases how the Tulou interprets Disconnection from residents’ aspects of keeping their privacy, escaping from unrest era, structure, and functions. The alteration of social structure and family structure is why the Tulou has lost its meaning as a residence.
The Connection chapter is in Chinese style, inspired by magazine and cigarette packages from the 30s to enhance culture and building.
The disconnection chapter’s overall concept is isolation. The modernist style was chosen to create a distinct design personality.
The French fold binding helps with the connection concept while allowing me to place the disconnection pages hidden in the folded pages. It creates both a sense of togetherness and separation between readers and the contents.
Each of the three sections of “Connection” concludes with an idiom and a phrase from an ancient poem, along with illustrations, to help readers who do not know Chinese understand it better.
Below you can view the design of all pages for both Connection and Disconnection.
